Field guide
How ATS screens cybersecurity resumes
Security hiring leans on credentials more than most fields. Many postings state a required certification or clearance, and recruiters often filter on those before reading anything else.
What recruiters filter and search on
- Required certifications such as CISSP, Security+, GCIH or OSCP, often with an "or" between them
- Security clearance level and status for government and defense roles
- Tools and frameworks: SIEM and EDR products, NIST, ISO 27001, MITRE ATT&CK
Name things the way the posting does
- List certifications by full name and acronym in a Certifications section: "Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)"
- State a clearance precisely: level and that it is active
- Name the product, not the category: "Splunk" and "CrowdStrike Falcon", not only "SIEM" and "EDR"
What trips up parsers in this field
- No Certifications section, so certifications are buried in a paragraph
- Inconsistent cert names ("Sec+" vs "Security+")
- Clearance mentioned only in a cover letter
